Can’t I just wave a magic wand and I’ll be instantly transported into my new apartment without having to, you know, actually do anything???????

What do you mean, that’s only possible in Harry Potter?!

Finished my term paper but I’ll leave it alone for a bit before printing it out (it was originally due 4/28 but my teacher’s changed the date to 5/5). While writing the paper this weekend, I’ve had Star Wars, Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith on for background noise. Earlier this morning, I was almost done the movie (and almost done my paper) when I noticed something intriguing. It was the part where Anakin leaps over Obi-Wan and winds up losing a good number of limbs in the process. Anakin tumbles down the ravine (or whatever it's called), stops, and kind of lays there for a second before moving. When the camera pans back to Obi-Wan, he has this look on his face like, "Oh shit, I didn't kill him after all. Son of a bitch!" (on my DVD, it happens at about the 1:59:36 mark). Interesting. It’s almost like, if that blow had killed Anakin, it would have "made things easier" for Obi-Wan if that makes any sense. Now he has to debate what to do next. On-screen this translates to him walking away, which seems pretty cold-hearted. In the novelization, he rationalizes this choice by telling himself that enough people have died today, he can't bring himself to kill Anakin when the latter is defenseless now, but Padme's still alive and at least he can help her, so that's how he'll make it up to Anakin, by making sure Anakin's family is okay, etc. And if this paper can make it to my professor’s desk without the topic changing from depersonalization in The Moonstone to gender subtext in Star Wars, then I might not fail this class after all.

Migraine of sorts but I’m behind on my “annotated bibliography” due 4/21. My final paper is due 4/28. So I went to Manayunk tonight and signed a one-year lease on a 2-bedroom apartment in the Philadelphia suburbs. Hurrah for me! Now Dad and I are watching the first-season finale of Torchwood on DVD. I was listening to the below song on the drive home so even though it really has nothing to do with renting a flat, it’s now my “flat-renting” song!

“Dance, Magic Dance”
David Bowie
Labyrinth, 1985

You remind me of the babe
(What babe?)
Babe with the power
(What power?)
Power of voodoo
(Who do?)
You do
(Do what?)
Remind me of the babe

I saw my baby, crying hard as babe could cry
What could I do?
My baby's love had gone
And left my baby blue
Nobody knew

What kind of magic spell to use
Slime and snails
Or puppy dog tails
Thunder or lightning
Then baby said......
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Put that baby spell on me
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby, make him free

I saw my baby, trying hard as babe could try
What could I do?
My baby's fun had gone
And left my baby blue
Nobody knew

What kind of magic spell to use
Slime and snails
Puppy dog's tails
Thunder or lightning
Then baby said....

Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Put that baby spell on me

Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby, make him free

Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that baby spell on me (ooh)

You remind me of the babe
(What babe?)
The babe with the power
(What power?)
Power of voodoo
(Who do?)
You do
(Do what?)
Remind me of the babe

Dance magic, dance, ooh ooh ooh
Dance magic, dance magic, ooh ooh ooh
Dance magic

What kind of magic spell to use
Slime and snails
Or puppy dog tails
Thunder or lightning
Something frightening

Dance magic, dance
Dance magic, dance
Put that baby spell on me

Jump magic, jump
Jump magic, jump
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby make him free

Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby

Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)

For the time being, expect more "song lyrics serve as window into inner thoughts" entries for a while, until I sort some things out. Here's a particularly apt one that popped up on my iPod this morning.

"Close of the Day"-- Grey Eye Glances, Painted Pictures, 1998 (hidden track)
Tell me, your fields are aflower with poppies posing
and tell me, they've been waiting for hours
for the close of the day
Tell me, do you seize the emotions
fading murmurs (anyone home?)
Tell me I've got magical potions rising from the gramophone
So you say you want me
So you say you need me
Would you say you'd follow me through all the confusion?
Falling flowers fade away
So you think that you just may
come in time to leave before I sense the intrusion?

[Refrain]
God help me if I get there long before you
and find a way to build a fence without you
and hide in places where I keep me from you

Tell me nothing's lost on the journey
I lost track so long ago and
Tell me to ignore every warning,
shooting sparks on barren coast
So suppose it's real to you
So suppose I feel it too
Every indication leading back to whence from where it came
All the peace that we had found
was left there on the proving ground
in the place where destiny had once played her vision game

[Refrain]
God help me when I get this way when all the calm
within is inside out and all I feel is numb
God help me when I get this way
and think that we have nothing left to say
'Cause I want you to stay because you want to
I want you to stay because you need to
I want you to stay and not have to ask you

[kick-ass instrumental interlude]

But you're talking to me and you're telling me everything you think I should know
You're talking at me and you're telling me, "One more thing before I have to go"
And you're telling me I should be careful, I could get hurt
But I thought if I changed the room around
something would give but nothing did
And all I'm left with is an unfamiliar place to lay my head
and in this place where I have made my bed,
he seeps me into my dreams and says he has nothing left to give,
so I suppose the time has come to live

[Refrain]
God help me when I get this way when all the calm
within is inside out and I feel is numb
God help me when I get this way
and think that we have nothing left to say
'Cause I want you to stay because you want to
I want you to stay because you need to
I want you to stay and not have to ask you

Dear Internet citizens:
When referring to the video-hosting website, please use the “youtube” spelling as that is the correct one. “U-tube” is not correct. “Utube” is incorrect as well. When you use “utube” or “u-tube” to refer to “youtube,” it makes me think that you’re either being facetious or just out of touch.

Sincerely,
Kate the elder.

Of course, this doesn’t change the fact that I really do have a problem understanding mathematics. Some people like tomatoes, others like chocolate.

Context for this entry:
-Adapted from an email
-I recently re-read Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl having not read it since I was about 10 or 11 years old. So here are my thoughts on it (again, this was originally written in an email).
I think what upsets me most about re-reading Anne Frank's diary is that as an adult, it's somehow that much worse knowing how the story ends before it even begins. If this were a work of fiction and you re-read it, you could just grumble about the unhappy ending again and go about your day. But going into the book knowing that Anne's ruminations about "life when the war is over" won't come true for her, reading her entries about D-Day and knowing that the Allies' boost won't come soon enough for her or her family because they'll be discovered just two months after those entries...it definitely made me despair about the state of the world. And if you haven’t read the book, you definitely should. Yes, the ending hangs over your head the entire time but in the meantime, Anne’s entries are heartbreaking, expressive, uplifting and even funny (in the edition I’ve had since 1993, an early entry describes her teachers are “freaks,” while a newer translation just refers to them as “misunderstood.” Either way, she’s kind the girl you’d want to be friends with when you were 13).
